NB Combat Sport Licences and Event Permits

Overview
The New Brunswick Combat Sport Commission established under the Combat Sport Act, has as its objects and purposes, to approve and regulate events in combat sports, including:
a) issuing permits for the holding of events,
b) issuing licences for persons who participate in events,
c) establishing a code of conduct for participants in events, and
d) carrying out any other activities or duties authorized or required under the Act or that the Lieutenant-Governor in Council directs.
Eligibility
To be eligible to promote, compete in or officiate a combat sport (outside of those amateur sports designated for regulation by a provincial sport organization), individuals must obtain a licence.
All individuals are eligible to apply for a licence to compete in a Combat Sport. Those applying for a contestant’s licence who are under the age of 18 must satisfy the Commission that they have the skills and experience necessary to participate as a contestant in professional bouts in a combat sport based on his or her record as a contestant in amateur bouts in a combat sport.
Description
The Commission will play a key role in the application of the Combat Sport Act and Regulations that came into force on November 1, 2014. In doing so, it will help to control the environment in which combat sport events take place and mitigate health and safety risks for participants. The Commission will receive and assess all applications for professional combat sport events as well as any amateur events not regulated by a recognized provincial sport organization. The Commission will ensure that medical staff is in place, fighters are healthy, and that match-ups are appropriate.
Under Section 83 (S.83) of the Criminal Code of Canada, it is an offence to have any involvement in a “prize fight” (defined as an "encounter or fight with fists, hands or feet"). An Act to amend the Criminal Code (prize fights), received Royal Assent on June 19, 2013. The new Act now expands the list of permitted exceptions to the “prize fight” offence for amateur combative sports that are on the programme of the International Olympic Committee (i.e. boxing, wrestling, judo and taekwondo), as well as authorizes provinces to regulate specific contests including professional boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA).
