GRAND MANAN (GNB) – Investments by the provincial and federal governments will support renovations and upgrades to the Swallowtail Lighthouse on Grand Manan Island.

“The Swallowtail Lighthouse is an iconic New Brunswick landmark that attracts and welcomes visitors to Grand Manan Island,” said Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “We are pleased to support the restoration of this important tourism infrastructure, and we appreciate the work of the volunteers at the Swallowtail Keepers Society.”

The project involves work on the lighthouse itself, as well as the lightkeeper’s building.

“Tourism is vital to our rural communities – attracting visitors, creating jobs and driving local business,” said federal Rural Economic Development Minister Gudie Hutchings, who is also minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). “I am pleased the Government of Canada, through ACOA, is helping organizations like the Swallowtail Keepers Society in Grand Manan strengthen their tourism profile so that more people can discover the unique experiences the region has to offer.”

The provincial government is investing $85,000 through the Regional Development Corporation while the federal government is providing $85,000 through ACOA.

“We are thrilled with the support received from the Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick,” said society president Bart Myers. “These contributions have allowed us to move forward with the restoration of these historic buildings and preserve them for generations to come.”
