Government of New Brunswick

Overview

Liquor licences are required by persons or businesses that want to sell or manufacture liquor products in New Brunswick.

Eligibility

All liquor licence or permit applicants must be 19 years of age or older.

Description

A liquor licence is required by any person or businesses that want to sell liquor in a public place or who wants to manufacture alcoholic beverages.

The application fee for a dining-room, lounge, club, special facility, or in-house brewery licence must be received with the initial application.

A lounge licence is required for selling liquor in public places such as bars or pubs. A lounge licence does not permit persons under the age of nineteen to be on the licensed premises without parental accompaniment.

A dining-room licence is required for selling liquor in public places such as bars, restaurants or pubs that sell food. A dining-room licence permits persons under the age of 19 to be on the premises without parental accompaniment.

A wine serving licence is required to serve wine supplied by a customer who is 19 years of age or older. The wine serving licensee may not hold any other licence under the Liquor Control Act (meaning no liquor remains on site).

A special facility licence is required to sell liquor in a public place such as a sporting, cultural or theatrical establishment, as well as a trade and convention centre, hotel/motel complexes, excursion boats, airplanes, trains, and federal/provincial/municipal parks.

A club licence is required to sell liquor in a forces canteen or a non-proprietary club that is not operated for the personal benefit of any member or shareholder.

A catering licence is required by someone who holds another liquor licence under the Liquor Control Act and wishes to cater liquor with food outside of their licensed establishment.

A special events licence is required for events of seven or fewer days where liquor will be served in public places such as festivals and community events, including outdoor areas. Special events licences issued for public events must be conducted without the intention of commercial or personal gain or profit.

An entertainment/exotic licence is required for live entertainment within an existing liquor licensed establishment.

An in-house brewery licence can only be issued to someone who already has an existing dining-room, lounge or special facility licence. An in-house brewery licence is required for manufacturing beer and selling it in the licensed establishment.

A sacramental wine vendor's licence is required for persons who sell wine to the clergy.

A brewer's licence is required for a manufacturer of beer for commercial purposes. To manufacture beer, licensees are also required to be duly licensed by the Government of Canada under the Excise Tax Act of Canada.

A distiller's licence is required for a manufacturer of spirits for commercial purposes.

A winery licence is required for a manufacturer of wine for commercial purposes.

A licence extension can be authorized for a special event not adjacent to a licensed establishment (dining room, lounge and special facility licences).

The Liquor Control Act is administered by the Department of Public Safety.
