FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Health has eliminated a recent backlog in the processing of applications for medicare cards.

“Thanks to a concerted effort by staff, we have eliminated the backlog,” said Health Minister Bruce Fitch. “Fully completed new applications are now being assessed and processed within an eight-week window, just as they were prior to COVID-19.”

Earlier this fall, the processing of applications was taking as long as 16 weeks. That was due to the growing number of applications received from new residents of the province and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At last estimate, the provincial population is now more than 820,000.

The application for registration is available online.
