FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government signed a collective agreement today with Local 1840 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

This agreement covers about 80 court stenographers working at the Department of Justice and Public Safety.

“I thank the two negotiating teams for reaching this agreement,” said Treasury Board President Roger Melanson. “Your government is working to foster a proud, productive and professional public service. This agreement illustrates our commitment to ensuring that the government treats its employees with fairness by respecting the collective bargaining process.”

With this agreement, the provincial government has now signed agreements with all 25 bargaining groups across the civil service, school districts and regional health authorities over the past three years.

“I want to recognize the contribution of the public sector unions to the constructive approach taken towards negotiations over the past three years,” said Melanson. “These negotiations can be difficult and challenging at times, but the milestone that we have reached today demonstrates that, when done in good faith, the outcome is positive.”

The 25 bargaining groups represent about 40,000 employees.
