Overview

Established in December 2000, the Order of New Brunswick is the highest honour of the Province of New Brunswick. The object of the Order of New Brunswick is to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement and who have made outstanding contributions to the social, cultural or economic well-being of New Brunswick and its residents.

Eligibility

Any Canadian citizen who is a present or former long-term resident of New Brunswick is eligible for nomination to the Order of New Brunswick.

Individuals who have contributed significantly to the social, cultural and/or economic well-being of New Brunswick and its residents by demonstrating excellence and achievement in a given area.

Elected representatives presently serving in the House of Commons, the Senate, the Provincial Legislature and judges of any court are not eligible for nomination.

The Order of New Brunswick may be conferred posthumously if an individual's name has been approved for membership prior to that individual's death and, in exceptional circumstances, in respect of one individual who is nominated after his or her death.

Description

Anyone may nominate an individual, keeping in mind that the Order of New Brunswick recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the social, culture and/or economic well-being of New Brunswick and its residents.

Simply complete the nomination form; or write, telephone or fax the Order of New Brunswick , Office of Protocol and you will be sent a nomination form.

Please be advised to ask several other people to send in letters supporting your nomination. However, only one nomination form is required for each nominee.

An independent group called the Order of New Brunswick Advisory Council recommends the appointment of members to the Order of New Brunswick each year after considering all the nominations received. There are no fixed quotas or categories, but there is a maximum number of 5 appointments annually. The council reviews the nominations and puts forward names recommended for membership to the Order of New Brunswick. If your nominee is not chosen this year, you are welcome to submit the nomination again.

At a formal ceremony the Lieutenant Governor, as Chancellor of the Order of New Brunswick , and the Premier of the Province of New Brunswick will present each recipient with a medal in the form of a stylized purple violet, the provincial floral emblem, bearing the shield of arms of New Brunswick surmounted by the Crown.

The medal is worn with a red, gold, and blue ribbon. They also receive a lapel pin and a certificate. Members of the order are entitled to use the initials O.N.B., after their names.
