FREDERICTON (GNB) – Local governments and local service districts will receive $75.6 million in community funding and equalization grants from the provincial government in 2022 to support their service needs and priorities.

“We know how important this information is for local governments as they begin their planning and budgets for next year,” said Local Government and Local Governance Reform Minister Daniel Allain.

Local governments will receive an equalization component of $53.2 million with a core funding component of $13.6 million.

Local service districts will receive core funding of about $2.6 million and a police equalization component of almost $4.4 million.

The funding assists each municipality, regardless of where it is located, to provide a comparable level of service at a comparable tax rate.

The community funding and equalization grant formula also includes a calculation for policing costs for local governments served by the RCMP under the Provincial Police Service Agreement.

“Supporting our local governments, local service districts and regions is important as we embark upon local governance reform,” said Allain. “We have been engaging with New Brunswickers for months, and our white paper on local governance reform will be released by the end of the year.”

The list of Community Funding and Equalization Grants for municipalities and rural communities, and the list of municipal tax bases are available online.

Most property owners started receiving their property assessment notices for 2022 on Oct. 1. Last year was the first year these assessments were issued separately from their property tax (bills) notices.
