MONCTON (GNB) – Construction has begun on a $56-million coronary care unit (CCU) at The Moncton Hospital, which will enhance cardiac care for patients across the region.

The new unit will be a two-storey wing built on hospital property near the Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic on Arden Street. It will provide a significantly larger space for cardiac care, adding about 2,600 sq. metres (nearly 28,000 sq. feet) to the hospital’s building, and is expected to be completed in June 2026.

“This investment is in keeping with our government’s commitment to improve the health-care system,” said Health Minister Bruce Fitch. “It will allow more New Brunswickers with heart issues to be treated and will also allow some patients who undergo operations at the Heart Centre in Saint John to be transferred earlier in their recovery to the Moncton unit.

“This is one more way we are working to ensure access to primary health care and to surgery for New Brunswickers through the provincial health plan, Stabilizing Health Care: An Urgent Call to Action.”

Once completed, the new unit will include eight coronary care beds and a 30-bed cardiac/medical unit, for patients who require treatment for a variety of heart conditions.

“This is an important project which will greatly improve the quality of care for cardiac patients,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Richard Ames. “Our government is committed to making the necessary investments to maintain and improve our existing infrastructure, and I am proud of the role our department is playing to help better serve New Brunswickers in need of cardiac care.”

The new unit will be a relocation and expansion of two units currently housed inside the hospital – the cardiac intensive care unit and the cardiac/medical unit. In the new CCU, these units will be adjacent to one another, enabling staff to provide more seamless patient-centred care. It will also offer greater comfort and several private rooms for cardiac patients and their families.

The project is a partnership between the provincial government, the Horizon Health Network and the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation.

“When we kicked off the Extraordinary Care Campaign which helped raise funds for this new unit, we knew we had an ambitious goal. As a community, we were able to surpass our goal and raise $10.1 million,” said Robert K.
