FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has announced plans to build a new bridge on Route 133 in Robichaud to replace a structure damaged by Hurricane Dorian.
The new 95-metre bridge, named Kouchibouguac River Bridge No.1, will be constructed in the same location as the previous bridge, which was built in 1963.
“This is a vital link for the community,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Jill Green. “The proposed plan will result in the construction of a new bridge on the shortest possible timeline, with less of an environmental impact than other options and resulting in a more resilient bridge.”
In September of 2019, the Kouchibouguac River Bridge No.1 was closed due to structural concerns caused by damage inflicted by Hurricane Dorian. The structural issues included the significant loss of concrete from the underside of the deck at critical areas that directly impacted the bridge's strength.
Work on the new bridge is anticipated to start in 2022 once all permitting and approvals are obtained and be complete by the end of 2023, weather permitting. The temporary bridge will remain open until the construction of the new bridge begins.
