FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest $388 million in 2021-22 with the goal of maintaining the province’s infrastructure.

“Our economy is at a critical juncture and our government is balancing the needs of all New Brunswickers when making important decisions,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Jill Green, who tabled her department’s capital estimates today at the legislative assembly. “Our priority is to maintain the province’s assets as part of our commitment to create vibrant and sustainable communities.”

The department will allocate $180.2 million to its highway program; $46.8 million to its bridge program; $70.7 million for the federal-provincial program; $62.3 million for public works and infrastructure; $18 million for the Vehicle Management Agency; and $10 million for the Municipal Designated Highway program.

“These investments show that we are striking a balance between supporting recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and maintaining fiscal discipline,” said Green. “Projects will continue to be prioritized using the asset management principles to ensure funds are targeted at the most pressing needs. We will also continue to work with the federal government on key projects that align with our priorities.”

The department will continue work on several projects, including:

  • Anderson Bridge in Miramichi;
  • Centennial Bridge in Miramichi;
  • Coles Island bridges;
  • Edmundston-Madawaska International Bridge;
  • Fundy Connector Project;
  • Petitcodiac River Bridge;
  • Route 11, Shediac River to Cocagne River; and
  • Route 11, Cocagne River to Little Bouctouche River.

In addition, the department has budgeted $3.7 million to repair the Florenceville bridge; $2.2 million to rebuild the department’s Eel River depot that was destroyed in a fire in February; and $5.5 million to renovate the interior of the Departmental Building in Fredericton.

Design work is also continuing for a number of projects, including for the replacement of Salmon River Bridge No 1 in Chipman and of Vaughn Creek Covered Bridge in St. Martins.
