NEQOTKUK (GNB) – The provincial government has signed a development agreement with Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) that will provide more than $22 million over five years through the Regional Development Corporation to support housing and road repair.
The development agreement is the first of its kind.
Neqotkuk First Nation, with support from federal funding programs, will contribute $8.2 million over five years, for a total investment of $30.2 million.
“We want a New Brunswick where all First Nations communities prosper,” said Aboriginal Affairs Minister Arlene Dunn. “That means creating new economic development partnerships that provide long-term financial sustainability for First Nations. This is a new, modern economic partnership that demonstrates our commitment to ongoing dialogue around further partnership opportunities that support the priorities identified by First Nations.”
Dunn spoke on behalf of Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.
“Neqotkuk is pleased to partner with the province to address the housing shortage and crumbling roads in our community,” said Neqotkuk Chief Ross Perley. “Our community is facing ongoing challenges with homelessness, overcrowding and poor road conditions. This partnership is a positive step in the right direction. We look forward to continuing to work together on our other priorities.”
A commitment has also been made to continue discussions related to other priorities, such as an elders program, employment and economic development, youth, and Wolastoqey language education.
