FREDERICTON (GNB) – Applications are now being accepted for the position of New Brunswick’s commissioner on systemic racism.

As announced by the provincial government on March 24, a commissioner will be hired and tasked with engaging stakeholders to develop an understanding of the nature and impact of systemic racism in the province and to produce a final report by March 31, 2022.

“We are eager to begin this work, which will examine the nature and impact of systemic racism in our province and result in recommendations to address related concerns,” said Aboriginal Affairs Minister Arlene Dunn, who is also minister responsible for immigration.

Essential qualifications for the job include:

• Demonstrated understanding of the demographic, social, economic, cultural and linguistic context in New Brunswick.
• Familiarity of obligations under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the New Brunswick Human Rights Act.
• Knowledge and substantive expertise on the subject of systemic racism, including lived experience of systemic racism.

A full list of the qualifications that candidates will be screened against are listed in the invitation to applicants online. The Executive Council Office will screen candidates and prepare a submission to cabinet for the appointment of the commissioner.
