FREDERICTON (GNB) – Kingsclear First Nation is hosting the 2017 New Brunswick Indian Summer Games from Aug. 7 to 11.

“Athletes from First Nation communities in New Brunswick come together each summer to celebrate their culture, wellness and quality of life through sport,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Ed Doherty, who is also minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs. “It is an opportunity for them to share their aboriginal heritage and athletic abilities with all New Brunswickers. I wish all the participants the best of luck in the various competitions.”

The five-day event will draw about 1,200 athletes, coaches, and community volunteers from Mi’gmaq and Wolastoq (Maliseet) communities across the province to a number of sporting activities.

“At this year’s Summer Games, we are proud to be adding rugby sevens which will offer more of a variety of sports to our athletes,” said Chief Gabriel Atwin. “As we move forward with hosting the games, I want to thank all our sponsors, coaches, volunteers and members for their participation. We are honoured to host the games. The last time the Summer Games were held at Kingsclear First Nation was in 1985.”

Competitions will take place in athletics, ball hockey, badminton, canoeing, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, T-Ball, volleyball, swimming, basketball, golf, baseball/softball and archery.

Venues will include the Kingsclear First Nation, the University of New Brunswick campus, the City of Fredericton ball fields on Prospect Street and the Mactaquac Provincial Park.

Opening ceremonies will include a parade of athletes, dancing and drumming groups.

The province is providing $20,000 in funding for the games. This support for aboriginal athlete development recognizes the Calls to Action as set out by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (recommendation #88).
