New Brunswick is home to two medical training programs, Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick based in Saint John and the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick based in Moncton, providing students with the opportunity to study medicine in their home province.
The provincial government also sponsors medical school seats at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Université Laval, and Université de Montréal.
Residency
New Brunswick is also home to 4 family medicine residency sites, 1 integrated family medicine-emergency medicine residency program as well as an internal medicine residency training site. In addition, the province also sponsors residency seats available through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) with partner institutions such as l’Université de Sherbrooke, Dalhousie University, Memorial University, l’Université Laval and l’Université de Montréal.
Postgraduate Training in the United States
Medical students who wish to pursue postgraduate medical training in the United States must obtain a statement of need. Statements of Need are issued by Health Canada to medical graduates to assist them to obtain a J-1 Visa to enter the US to pursue postgraduate medical training in the US. Applicants are expected to pursue medical training which is recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), and Canadian medical regulatory authorities, and which will lead to specialty certification and medical licensure in a province or territory.
